FISHERIES SCIENCE SYLLABUS

- Taxonomy of Indian Major Carps (IMC), catfishes, Mahseer, Hilsa and exotic food fishes. Cold water culturable fishes of India.
- Biology of Indian Major Carps (IMC), Mahseer, common carp, Grass carp, Silver carp and Tilapia.
- Induced breeding, ovaprim and its analogues. Different types of fish hatcheries. Production of stunted fish seed, hybridization, monosex culture, supermales, cryopreservation of fish gametes.
- Pre and post stocking management of ponds : air or sun drying of pond, ploughing, Liming, fertilization, bio-filtration, aeration and soil micronutrients, insect control.
- Pen culture, cage culture, recirculating aquaculture system.
- Monoculture, Polyculture, composite fish culture, Urban aquaculture : Ornamental fish culture, Aquaponies.
- Integrated fish culture : Paddy-cum-fish, cattle-cum-fish, Duck-cum-fish, Poultry cum-fish, Pig-cum-fish.
- Sewage fed fish culture and depuration of fish.
- Extensive, semi-intensive and intensive aquacultural systems.
- Fish stocking ratios and densities for different size-groups of fish seed. Fish carrying capacity of water bodies. Basics of fish population dynamics : Fecundity, recruitment, mortality, fishing effort, exploitable fish population.
- Natural and supplementary fish feeds, pelleted, floating and sinking feeds, larval feeds and their formulations.
- Breeding and culture of freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Rearing of the freshwater bivalve, Lamellidens spp. for pearl production.
- Fish diseases and their control : bacterial, fungal, ecto-parasitic and nutritional.
- Fisheries extension methods.
- Preparation of aquacultural, capture fishery and ornamental fish project proposals including budgeting and economics.

Fisheries Science Education in India
Fisheries Science deals with the study of managing and understanding fisheries. It includes aquaculture, fish processing technology, fisheries environment, fisheries biology, marine biology, limnology etc. The first fisheries education in India dated back to 1945, with the opening of All India Fisheries Training Courses in Barackpore and Chennai.
The fisheries science course includes Bachelor of Fisheries Science (4 years), Master of Fisheries Science (2 years) and PhD (3 years full fime or 5 years part time course). In India there are about 22 colleges that offer B.F.Sc. and M.F.Sc. course. These colleges are

For the first time in India, B.E. Fisheries Engineering course is offered by Tamilnadu Fisheries University at Nagapattinam from the year 2015-16. It’s a four year course started to meet the emerging trends in this fisheries field.
Eligibility
1. For B.F.Sc.: 12th standard (with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Botany and Zoology). Selection will be done through 12th class marks and entrance examinations conducted state wise and All India level
2. For M.F.Sc.: Pass in B.F.Sc.(minimum OGPA: 7/10), Pass in ICAR exam to be eligible to get admission in Central Institutes or pass in entrance exam conducted by state colleges.
3. For Ph.D: Pass in M.F.Sc. (minimum OGPA: 7/10). Pass in entrance exam conducted by the respective college or Research Institutes

- M.F.Sc. and Ph.D. degree holders with NET qualification can work as Assistant Professors and Professors in universities
- M.F.Sc. and Ph.D. students who have ARS qualification can work as Scientists in various research institutes in India.
- M.F.Sc. and Ph.D. students can take research jobs like Senior Research Fellows, Post-doctoral research fellows in various colleges and research institutes
- B.F.Sc. candidates can also work as Junior Research Fellow in various research institutes
