Whatever the reason may be for the collector seeking informants without leads, there can be no greater thrill than to discover by one’s own initiative an unusually fine folklore informant. And since most communities at this late date have at most only one or a few really talented traditional performers (if they have any at all), the collector is indeed fortunate who makes even one such discovery on any field trip. For the field worker who can take advantage of participation, however, the road leading to most of his informants will be paved for him by one or another of his participant contacts.
